TANAHASHI’S RISE & OKADA’S STUMBLE
Tanahashi on a roll, stacking wins and putting himself up as contender after a rough start. Women are crying, reaching out to touch him and his wiping sweat all over peoples Tanahashi towls and TanaBears. He’s coming up and right now tied at top. Okada, after being on top for so long took a big stumble. After tlking smack about Tanahashi getting the main events even though he was the Heavyweight champ! Okada dropped two falls, one being the best match of the tournament. People said their match would decide the block, maybe it won’t but it will be incredibly important.
BLOCK A’S NEW MVP DESERVES MORE
Tomohiro Ishii took the MVP crown for A block from Marufuji. Amazing match with Tanahashi, Match of the Tournament with Okada, and than a great match with SANADA. Ishii has been bringing the good and will do so even in his final match despite being eliminated. That’s sad though, eliminated already. There’s a deadlock on top of the block and Ishii is not there. The man has delivered every night and will on the final block A night. Ishii deserves to win a G1 or at least to get to the finals. He kills himself and puts on great matches, elevates talents (this year Tama Tonga, and maybe even SANADA) and taking what should be excellent matches and making them better. Ishii has been on fire this year, he’s got the fans, Ishii deserves something big. Give him a tournament win! Even if its just the New Japan Cup. Hell, let him hold the #2 belt.
ELIMINATED BUT NOT GIVING UP
Tenzan, Tama Tonga, Ishii and SANADA are out but they’re still going to work hard or will still work hard. EVIL and Honma are out in B block but they are still going to work hard. They may not win but they’ll still play spoiler for peoples chances. Hell! They might still score an important win to file into the future. Looking forward to seeing how screws up who’s chances.
So Wednesday is the second to last Block B, right now with five wrestlers trailing Naito who is on top of the block. After that the last nights of Block A and Block B and than the final night, each night needs a write up.
Block A has Okada, Tanahashi, Marufuji, Fale and Goto tied at top. Friday will be headlined by Okada vs Tanahashi. The biggest feud in NJPW continues as the champ takes on the companies top star. Many have eyes on this deciding to block, but with the five way tie it could mean someone else wins the block. Goto and Marufuji will face off with both only holding one tiebreaker win over the other three men on the top of the block. Also we got Tama at 6 points taking on stablemate Fale who is tied on the top. I don’t know if I see Tonga spoiling his chances but Fale does go in with two tiebreaker wins against Marufuji and Okada. Rounding out is Makabe versus Ishii with both being out, Makabe will be looking for second place tie while Ishii will try to get that 4th win. SANADA and Tenzen are both out but old man Tenzen who started with 2 wins and than a long losing stretch will look to close strong while SANADA will, like Ishii, looking for that 4th win. I got Tanahashi winning but I am thinking Marufuji might just pull it out. This will be a very interesting night.
Block B’s points breakdown will be different by the time Saturday rolls around but I expect it just means we’ll have more ties in the middle or the top. Yuji Nagata and Tomoaki Honma are out of the running but will want to close strong. Toru Yano takes on his CHAOS stablemate YoshiHasi. Yano is still in the running right now, YoshiHashi is probably out. Yano has been a… I don’t care and he won’t win but the real story is YoshiHashi getting his G1 run and stepping up but this match will probably be a short forgettable affair. Shibata takes on EVIL, here EVIL can be a spoiler and if he does ruin Shibata’s shot at the finals he’ll add another victory over a champion. EVIL already beat Elgin so he can get an IC title shot, beating Shibata would give him a shot at the NEVER belt. Elgin and Nakajima are still in the running, I expect this to be every good. Nakajima is a guest in NJPW and has dazzled where as Elgin continues to cement his place as a top guy. Naito, the current block captain, takes on Kenny Omega. Omega’s been great and is on Naitos heels. This could screw up Naitos shot, Omega is still in. I got Naito winning and going against Tanahahsi for a throwback to 2013 G1 but maybe not…
Finals Night on Sunday will include the finals as well as an IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Title match between the Briscoes taking on Bullet Club combination of Yujiro Takahashi and Hangman Page. This is the Briscoes first defense and given the chance they can help rebuild the division but their opponents… Takahashi is pretty bad and was left out of G1 because of lackluster performances. Hangman Page is okay. Ring of Honor champion Jay Lethal will defend against legendary Satoshi Kojima, could be really good. Both Briscoes and Lethal are there the whole weekend, with Lethal teaming up with Los Ingobernables de Japon in some undercard matches on Friday and Saturday. Details of other matches will come up the night before, so I expect some throw away tag matches and a few exhibition matches. It will be a very strong show.
